Trade Shows

Trade shows allow us to talk face to face with other industry professionals about how we can help support workshops to reduce enhance their customer service and increase revenue at the same time. In 2023 we exhibited at 2 of the UK’s busiest shows, Automechanika and Mechanex!

In June we visited Automechanika at the NEC in Birmingham. We spent 3 days talking to hundreds of people about the importance of maintaining batteries and showing CTEK’s latest EV charger, the Chargestorm 2.

At the recent Mechanex show Ken Clark took to the stage to give a presentation on how workshops can ‘get 12V EV ready’.

It was an intriguing title for a presentation. Independent workshops currently feel ‘locked out’ of the EV vehicle servicing market. When it comes to the battery they are unable to access the technology that can evaluate and rebalance the traction – or power – batteries of electric vehicles.

However, Ken came at the EV opportunity from a different angle by focusing on the opportunity the 12V battery in EV’s presents.

It is not widely known that all EV’s have a ‘standard’ 12V starter type battery fitted in the vehicle. It does not operate as  a starter battery in the traditional sense but instead controls the vital

Tuesday 7^th October to Wednesday 8^th October we had a stand at Mechanex 2023 in Sandown. It was great to meet everyone who attended and discuss the latest battery management technologies and a lot more.

About Lewis Clark

Lewis has been competing in multiple races, resulting in him taking the top spot at last years Hot Hatch Series in Castle Coombe. After being victorious in the Hot Hatch Series, Lewis shifted his focus to taking the Champions Cup.

What is the Champions Cup?

Unlike the Hot Hatch Series, where you can drive any hatchback car, the Champions Cup requires everyone to drive the same car. Every driver drove a Ford Focus Zetec S 2.0L. This means it is purely down to the driver’s skill to take the cup.

The Qualifying

It’s a big advantage to start off the race sitting on the start line. Lewis managed to finish qualifying in 2^nd place, putting him in 2^nd place on the grid for the start of Race 1.

At the end of May 2023 we starting packing up and moved south from Darlaston, Birmingham to our new location down in Tortworth, South Gloucestershire!

At the end of 2022 we decided to take the opportunity to move the business south, as that’s where most of our team lives and we wanted a space that allowed us to expand and grow with our future plans. The search was on! The team spent countless hours looking at different units and planning how the space could work for us.

Eventually we decided to settle in Tortworth Business Park! Since then we have….

• Loaded endless lorries
• Designed and built a new service and repair centre
• Hired 3 new team members
• Built a new CTEK EV charger configuration room

Our battery management expert Ken Clark took his own vehicle into a workshop for an inspection after receiving multiple warning lights.

Has Your Vehicle Been Inspected Properly?

Ken noticed several warning lights on the dashboard and knew he needed to get the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. The technician at the workshop ran a series of tests which lasted around four hours providing results which included a video report. The reports revealed nothing abnormal about the vehicle, so the technician determined that the programme was faulty within the vehicle and needed to be re-programmed.

All the information that Ken would need is on the report, such as the condition of brake pads, tyres, exhaust, and brake fluid including the recommended time to make a replacement. Although the report may seem conclusive,

The Mechanex Show attracts automotive professionals from around the UK, who work in all manner of roles across the industry. Visitors to the show are keen to speak to manufacturers and stay up to date on industry development. The show allows visitors to familiarise themselves with leading names in the industry, try and buy their latest products and build a rapport with future partnership opportunities.

About Lewis Clark

Rotronics’ sponsored race driver Lewis Clark, has been competing for over three years in the motorsport scene, including taking part in a variety of Championships at Castle Combe Circuit. On his first ever outing in 2020 competing within the Hot Hatch series he manged to win his class, beating more experienced competitors and high-powered cars. Lewis has had some amazing races at Castle Combe Circuit this season over three years while driving his Ford Fiesta ST. In the eight rounds that make up the Castle Combe Hot Hatch Series, Lewis competed at all of them and took home eight trophies which included four first, three second and one for third. He competed in Class A alongside a grid made up of all front wheel drive cars, ranging from 1400cc up to 2000cc split into multiple classes.

On September 28th and 29th, we exhibited at the Professional Recovery tow Show event, where we showcased our knowledge of battery management techniques and programmes to visitors. Each year the event brings together professionals from different industries from all over the UK to display and present thee latest designs in roadside vehicles and technology equipment.

We are pleased to announce that ROBIS has reached five million test results since its inception in February 2019.

ROBIS has been busy over the past three years, gathering battery data from vehicle workshop customers across different industry sectors, including automotive main dealers, commercial vehicles, emergency services, fleet workshops, independent workshops, public service vehicles, and specialist roadside organisations. From the five million battery tests to date, key results show that:

• 41% of the batteries were in good condition, showing that 59% of the vehicles on the road require some attention
• 35% of batteries required charging to prevent roadside breakdown
• 13% needed replacing to get vehicles back on the road

We were recently invited to the biggest recovery industry event in the UK - The Professional Recovery Tow Show.

The Professional Recovery Tow Show took place from September 28^th to 30^th, bringing together recovery industry professionals from across the UK, to discuss the latest technology developments within a quickly changing industry. The trade show takes place annually over 2 days, paired with an annual business seminar and outdoor demonstration area.

During the event, we got stuck in to give our opinion on electric vehicle (EV) technology, by speaking at the business seminar sponsored by government agency National Highways.

Rotronics Managing Director Ken Clark visited the Commercial Vehicle Show 2021, held at the NEC in Birmingham.

Our team enjoy speaking to automotive industry professionals about the latest battery management technology and trends within the industry. Discussed trends are backed up by battery test result data from our online web-based dashboard and reporting system, ROBIS, now with over 4.3 million uploaded test results. The CV Show 2021 was the perfect opportunity to do just that, as it has been the largest industry-leading UK distribution, freight transport, and logistics roadshow for over 20 years.

The webinar included an insight into the battery management industry, as well as interactive polls and a Q&A session.

The IMI provides career support and recognises the achievements of a broad range of automotive industry professionals, including workshop managers, owners, technicians, automotive lecturers, and training consultants.

Our partnership with the IMI has evolved throughout the years. Previously, we've hosted a variety of battery management webinars, including a practical demonstration at Northamptonshire College in 2016, and a battery technology and maintenance event at East Kent MA in 2017.

We continue to work with the IMI to support members by hosting battery management events, such as our latest battery management webinar.

Webinar Partnerships

Last month, Managing Director Ken Clark presented a battery management webinar to members of the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE) and the Norfolk Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE).

Having previously partnered with the IRTE and SOE, Ken was invited to host the webinar to share insights with attendees on battery management within the automotive industry. Attendees included workshop managers and owners, as well as members with an interest in the automotive industry.

Ken was delighted to have been invited to present to the SOE and IRTE and will be involved in future webinars and explained “We have recognised the importance of not only providing quality battery management equipment to our customers, but also ensuring it is used correctly to support key workshop objectives and cost-drivers”.

The demand for battery management programmes within workshops is predicted to increase dramatically in 2021, as a decline in new vehicle production means older vehicles will continue operating for longer. The increase in older vehicles used on the road will boost requirements for workshop servicing, including battery management.

Car Manufacturing Output Declines 27%

According to SMMT (2021), this year has been the “weakest January since 2009, as UK car manufacturing output declines -27.3% to 86,052 units – the 17th consecutive monthly decline”. Global supply chain problems, less vehicle demand and the pandemic have caused a decline in production, making vehicle maintenance a top industry priority.

Providing a proactive battery management programme as part of your workshops offering will provide a new revenue stream during this uncertain time. It can also improve customer service opportunities, by keeping customers’ cars working in good condition for longer.

Commercial workshop managers must invest in a proactive battery management programme, as a decline in commercial vehicle production means ageing fleets are active for longer on UK roads.

Commercial Vehicle Production in Decline

According to SMMT (2021a), the UKs “production of commercial vehicles (CVs) declined 31.5% in January, with just 5,616 units leaving factory gates” in “the worst start to the year since 2015”. The COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit impacts have caused new vehicle demand to fall.

Declining production means emergency services, logistics, public service vehicles and other commercial industries, are using ageing vehicles and batteries for longer, increasing the chance of roadside breakdowns and vehicle non-starts, due to discharged or damaged batteries.

Increased breakdowns cause time, budget and resource strains for commercial workshops, and the solution is to regularly test and charge batteries to avoid future defects.

A record-breaking 3 million battery tests have now been recorded on ROBIS.

ROBIS is an industry-first web-based dashboard and reporting system, used by international, national, and regional workshops to identify battery problems within their fleet. The system collects data on the frequency of battery tests, alongside live battery health data, presented in easy-to-read reports that identify batteries in need of recharging, replacing, or re-balancing. 3 Million Tests - A Huge Milestone

3 million recorded tests is a huge milestone, demonstrating the growing demand for remote battery management. Testing a vehicle’s battery health on a regular basis helps to prevent battery problems

The automotive industry is becoming increasingly reliant on batteries to maintain a vehicle’s components, such as start/stop technology, lights, stereo, and GPS. This includes all types of new vehicles, including electric vehicles, which have seen registrations rise by 127% since 2019.

New Features - New Battery Requirements

Specifications for new features and add-ons within automotive manufacturing, such as improved cruise control, as well as higher requirements for economical vehicles, have increased requirements for battery power. This has concluded with a higher reliability on automotive electrification, resulting in new opportunities for battery defects.

Modern vehicle batteries must now be equipped with powerful cranking abilities (CCA) to start an engine in colder temperatures, whilst supporting smaller loads for longer periods (reserve capacity). Batteries should also have quick charge acceptance, to efficiently maintain the power crucial for vehicle operation.

This month, our Managing Director Ken Clark has remotely delivered a series of battery maintenance training sessions to senior managers and technicians at Abellio London. Abellio London is a large transport company, responsible for operating bus fleets and servicing customers throughout the Greater London area.

The virtual training sessions demonstrated full battery system testing procedures and features, supporting workshop operations to achieve improved battery management efficiencies, utilising the Midtronics EXP1000FHD fleet heavy duty battery tester, and our industry-first web-based dashboard and reporting system, ROBIS.

The Abellio London delegates also received training to help them interpret battery test print outs, allowing the technicians to effectively identify battery defects and issues, reducing unnecessary battery spend. To further support with the Abellio technicians’ training, Ken Clark has also produced ‘How To’ guides to reinforce training messages.

Six delegates from Chicago and Brazil joined Rotronics managing director, Ken Clark, and his team for the hour-long Webex training session on the Midtronics CXPRO50/2 chargers.  Rotronics has been the UK distributor for the Midtronics range of products since 2003 and was asked to conduct the training programme for the global team by Midtronics because of their in-depth knowledge of the products and battery management solutions.

Last night, Ken Clark, Managing Director of Rotronics, lead a lecture and practical demonstration at Northamptonshire College for the Northamptonshire Member Association of the IMI (The Institute of the Motor Industry).  The event was organised to support individuals working in the Motor Industry.

Battery maintenance is a fairly unknown sector, so we have identified just some of the industry perceptions that are out there

It's was great to see the support of The AA on twitter yesterday. They have been working in partnership with Rotronics for many years, using our Midtronics battery testers which, as they say, can analyse the battery with the bonnet closed and the car locked.

But why?? is the question that someone asked. As the AA so succinctly said, it is to ensure the car is shutting down sufficiently once locked. They are referring to the testers ability in performing a “shut down” profile of the vehicles electrical system, to identify any out of the ordinary loads or defects that may cause the battery to drain.
