Rotronics only supply Midtronics battery testers, due to their accuracy, features and user benefits. Understanding how to carry out a battery test and understand the results is vital for a successful battery management programme.
Before the Battery Test
Before testing any battery, it is essential to carry out some pre-test checks. The physical state of the battery can affect how well the tester can perform, a damaged battery can effect test results.
First off, carry out a visual inspection of the battery. Look for any defects such as…
- Corrosion or damage on the battery terminals
- The case of the battery bulging or cracked. If the battery has bulged or cracked, you will need to replace the battery immediately
- Dirt or debris on the terminals. Clean any dirt or debris off of the terminals before the test
Once you have completed a visual inspection, connect the battery tester clamps to the poles of the battery. Ensure that the clamps are connected securely and un-obstructed.
Carrying out the Battery Test
Before the test is carried out, the tester will ask you to input data about how you are testing the battery and for information about the battery itself. It is essential that all data is entered as accurately as possible. If incorrect data is entered this will affect the test result.
You will need to select if the battery is in or out of a vehicle and input information about the battery. Battery information includes the battery type and the rating. All of this information will be available on the battery’s label. You may also be asked to record the temperature of the battery, using the in-built temperature sensor.
If you have entered all information correctly, your test results will accurately reflect the state of the battery.
Test Results
Once the tester has completed the Battery test, it will display the results. At the top of the screen you will be presented with a test decision. The test decision will provide you with a simple action to follow. You may be presented with the following decisions…
- Good Battery
- Good – Recharge
- Charge & Retest
- System Noise
- Replace Battery

System Noise
The tester could not accurately test the battery due to too much system noise. Ensure that the ignition, lights and radio are off.
Switch off ignition, radio and lighting and re-test.
Replace Battery
The battery is in poor condition.
Replace the battery immediately.
These decisions provide you with simple recommendations on what action should be taken next, however you will also be presented with the test data. This will include the voltage, the measured capacity, the rating you previously selected and the temperature that you recorded.
By pressing the down button on your tester you will be provided with more information. The second screen displays the state of health. This is a simple diagram showing the battery’s general health and its performance compared with a new battery.
Press down again and you will be presented with the battery’s state of charge. This is useful if you need to charge the battery.
